The Birth of the Group

What is this group about?

This supervision group is designed for those clinicians and clinicians in training, who are committed to growing and expanding their knowledge and application of creativity and expressive arts in their therapeutic practice and work with others. Many of the traditional mental health training programs are heavy on theory and structure and have little room in their curriculum for exposing students to alternative forms of interventions, many of which are considered to be outside of the “evidence-based treatment” interventions, but are shown to unequivocally assist client with deepening into their inner world and experiences.

This supervision group was a “brain child” of mine after teaching a university level counseling course for graduate clinicians in training. After the term ended, there still seemed to be great need to help students learn these “other” ways to work with clients, experiential exercises and creative activities to help clients access the core of their feelings, to get beyond words and cognitions into the heart of the matter deep inside. As such, this online supervision group was born to fill this need for a place where we all can continue to learn from one another about the tried and true methods for helping others. To provide a right brain learning environment to balance out the left brain learning traditionally offered in most university graduate level mental health training programs.

Group supervision is open to a variety of students and professionals, including those individuals who are employed in the helping fields. (For specific information about what constitutes a “helping field”, see FAQ.) The group is designed for clinicians and related practitioners in mental health and healthcare who are licensed or certified by a professional board and who would like to participate in continuing education or professional development goals to learn more using the expressive arts in clinical practice. The group is also available for those clinicians committed to ongoing supervision for excellence in their clinical work.

All participants must show proof of clinical malpractice insurance prior to first online supervision group. Participants are also encouraged to have relevant case material to bring to supervision for discussion and to follow ethical principals for confidentiality, informed consent, privacy and permission in presentation and discussion of any client information.

Supervision also includes: 2 additional brief email consultations each month with the supervisor and access to additional articles and resources in PDF form related to topics of discussion and clinical practice.
